A social media site is ready for beta when it has the following features: 

• A working user interface
• A way for users to create and share content
• A way for users to connect with each other
• A way to manage spam and abuse
• A way to collect feedback from users

Once these features are in place, the social media site can be released to a small group of users for beta testing.
